Ozempic® (Semaglutide) Injections for Weight Loss: How It Works and What to Expect

In South Florida, where obesity and weight-related health issues are increasingly common, many patients are choosing Ozempic® (Semaglutide) as an effective solution for weight loss and managing type 2 diabetes. With obesity linked to serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, Ozempic® offers a powerful tool to help patients regain control of their health. By reducing appetite and promoting weight loss, it addresses the root causes of obesity while also improving blood sugar levels.

Ozempic® (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injectable medication designed to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. It is also approved for reducing the risk of major cardiovascular events in individuals with type 2 diabetes and known heart disease. Proper dosing and administration are crucial to achieving optimal outcomes and minimizing side effects.

Starting Dose

  • Begin with 0.25 mg once weekly for the first 4 weeks.
  • This initial dose is not therapeutic; it helps the body adjust to the medication and reduces the likelihood of gastrointestinal side effects.

Maintenance Dose

  • After 4 weeks, increase the dose to 0.5 mg once weekly.
  • If additional blood sugar control is needed, the dose can be increased to 1 mg once weekly after at least 4 weeks at the 0.5 mg dose.
  • For some patients, the dose may be further increased to the maximum dose of 2 mg once weekly, depending on individual needs and physician recommendations.

Administration Guidelines

  1. Injection Sites: Administer Ozempic® subcutaneously into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm. Rotate injection sites to avoid irritation.
  2. Timing: Inject once weekly, on the same day each week, at any time of the day, with or without food.
  3. Missed Dose: If a dose is missed, administer it as soon as possible within 5 days. If more than 5 days have passed, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule.
  4. Pen Preparation: Follow instructions for priming the pen before the first use and ensure the correct dose is dialed before each injection.

Storage and Handling

  • Store unused Ozempic® pens in the refrigerator between 36°F and 46°F (2°C to 8°C).
  • After first use, pens can be stored at room temperature (up to 86°F/30°C) or refrigerated, and should be discarded after 56 days.
  • Protect from heat, light, and freezing.

Important Considerations

Consult your healthcare provider before adjusting doses or if you experience persistent side effects like nausea or vomiting.

Do not share the pen, even if the needle is changed, to prevent cross-contamination.
