Understanding Melanoma: How to Tell if a Mole Is Harmful or Harmless?
Our skin is our largest organ and an essential protector of our health. Living in sunny Florida, we love the outdoors, but it also means taking extra care of our skin. Skin cancer, especially melanoma, is something we can’t ignore. It can sneak up on you, either growing from a mole you already have or appearing as a new one. Here’s the deal—catching it early is key and can literally save your life.
Melanoma starts in the cells that give our skin its color, called melanocytes. Unlike other skin cancers, melanoma is less common but far more aggressive if not detected early. Overexposure to UV rays from the sun or tanning beds is a major factor, and Florida’s bright sunshine makes this even more relevant. Genetics, fair skin, and a history of severe sunburns can also increase your risk.
I like to keep it simple with my patients—remember the ABCDE rule when checking moles:
The most common kind spreads across the skin before it dives deeper, while nodular melanoma forms as a bump and is often more aggressive. Sun-damaged skin in older adults can see another form called lentigo maligna melanoma. And for those with darker skin, acral lentiginous melanoma may appear on palms, soles, or under the nails.

If you notice any changes in a mole or spot that make you uneasy, please see a dermatologist. A quick professional evaluation, including a possible biopsy, can offer peace of mind or catch an issue early.
Prevention goes a long way! Sunscreen is your best friend—use SPF 30 or higher daily. Seek shade during the hottest parts of the day, wear protective clothing, and ditch the tanning beds. Monthly self-checks and annual professional exams can catch anything early.
At Khrom Med Spa Florida, we’re passionate about keeping your skin healthy and radiant. If you have questions, need a professional skin check, or want to learn more about how to protect your skin, we’re here for you. Don’t worry about what seems like a little mole—let’s check it out together.
Melanoma can sometimes pop up where you least expect it—like under your nails or even on the soles of your feet. If you notice anything unusual, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d rather we laugh about something benign than miss something serious.
If melanoma is found, we’ll determine the best course of action together. Treatments range from simple removals to more comprehensive therapies, depending on how early we catch it. That’s why regular skin checks matter.
I’m here to help you take control of your skin health. If you’re unsure about a mole or just want to talk about preventative care, reach out. Together, we can keep your skin healthy and glowing—no matter what the Florida sun throws at us!
