As a cosmetic dermatologist with years of experience helping patients achieve their aesthetic goals, I’ve seen firsthand the transformative effects of neuromodulators like Botox, Xeomin®, and Dysport®. These popular treatments can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily relaxing facial muscles, giving the skin a smoother, rejuvenated look. While these treatments are widely used and generally considered safe, not everyone is a suitable candidate for them. – By Dr. Tatiana Khrom
In South Florida, where maintaining a youthful and refreshed appearance is often a priority due to our active social and outdoor lifestyle, it’s crucial to understand that Botox, Xeomin®, and Dysport® are not for everyone. As a doctor, my goal is to provide safe, effective treatments and ensure each patient’s well-being. Below, I outline who should avoid these neuromodulators and why.
Who Should Avoid Botox, Xeomin®, or Dysport® Injections?
Pregnant or Breastfeeding Women If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, it’s best to wait. There have been no definitive studies proving these neuromodulators are harmful to the fetus or infant, but as a precaution, I advise my patients to avoid Botox, Xeomin®, or Dysport® during this time.
People with Neuromuscular Disorders If you have a neuromuscular disease such as ALS, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, these injections may not be safe for you. These conditions affect nerve and muscle function, and using neuromodulators could exacerbate your symptoms or cause complications.
Allergic Reactions to Ingredients Botox, Xeomin®, and Dysport® contain botulinum toxin, and anyone with a history of allergic reactions to this substance or any of the other ingredients in the formulation should not undergo these treatments. Severe allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing, can occur, so it’s important to be aware of this risk.
Individuals with Skin Infections or Inflammation If you have an active skin infection, rash, or inflammation at the injection site, it’s better to wait until your skin heals completely. Injecting neuromodulators into infected skin could worsen the condition or cause irritation.
People with Known Sensitivity to Botulinum Toxin Some individuals may have an increased sensitivity to botulinum toxin, leading to side effects like muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or respiratory problems. It’s crucial to discuss any past reactions with your provider to ensure your safety.
Unrealistic Expectations Neuromodulators can deliver amazing results, but they’re not a magic fix for all wrinkles or skin imperfections. As a provider, I encourage patients to have realistic expectations about the temporary and subtle changes these treatments can offer. A thorough consultation will help you understand the possibilities and limitations of Botox, Xeomin®, and Dysport®.
Certain Medications and Supplements If you are on blood thinners, muscle relaxants, or certain antibiotics, it’s important to let your provider know. These medications can increase the risk of bruising or other complications. Always disclose your full medical history, including any supplements you’re taking, before receiving treatment.
People with Weakness or Drooping in Targeted Areas If you have pre-existing muscle weakness or drooping in areas targeted for injections, Botox, Xeomin®, or Dysport® may not be appropriate. Injecting these areas could worsen asymmetry or drooping. During your consultation, we’ll explore alternative treatments that may better suit your needs.
Popular Questions from Patients About Botox, Xeomin®, and Dysport® Injections
Is Botox safe during pregnancy?
Though there are no concrete studies showing that Botox is harmful to pregnant women or their babies, I advise all my patients to avoid the treatment until after childbirth and breastfeeding to be on the safe side.
How long do side effects last?
Common side effects such as minor bruising or swelling usually resolve within a few days. More serious side effects, like muscle weakness or drooping, are rare and temporary, lasting only a few weeks at most.
How often should I get injections?
Most of my patients return for touch-ups every 3 to 4 months, depending on their desired results and how their body metabolizes the product. We’ll create a treatment plan tailored to your skin type and goals.
Can I exercise after Botox or Dysport?
I recommend avoiding vigorous exercise for at least 24 hours post-injection to prevent the neuromodulator from spreading to unintended areas.
Can I switch between Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin?
Absolutely! Many patients switch between these treatments depending on their specific needs and response to each product. We’ll discuss which option is best for you during your consultation.
